Vomiting bug spreads at hospital

Three wards have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea

The number of patients hit by a bug while staying on closed hospital wards in Glasgow has increased.

Three wards at the Southern General Hospital were closed on Tuesday to new admissions after diarrhoea and vomiting affected 19 patients.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board said five more patients had the bug, bringing the total to 24.

The closed wards are care of the elderly, medical and orthopaedic. The cause is being investigated.

A statement from the board said an increase was "not unusual for an infection of this kind when symptoms can last up to 48 hours".

It added: "All affected patients remain within the three wards

"No-one is giving cause for concern as a direct result of the infection."
