Detectives investigating the death of a schoolboy in Inverclyde have arrested a 64-year-old man.

Darren Pyper, 14, died during a fight, at about 1900 BST, last Wednesday in Albert Road, Gourock.

A police spokesman said: "A 64-year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the death."

The man is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Thursday. A report will be sent to prosecutors.

After Darren's death, his father, Brian Pyper, 44, from Glasgow, said his son had a "heart of gold".

He said: "He was full of life, everyone just loved him. Such a cool wee guy, always there with a hug, always there with a smile on his face."

Chris Robertson, head teacher at Gourock High, said Darren was one of the most popular boys in third year.

"He was confident, amiable and daring," she said. .
