A philanthropist has reneged on his vow to donate £270,000 to keep museums and art galleries open on Mondays.

It is understood Adrian Pocock paid almost £80,000 to Glasgow City Council but donations stopped in October 2006.

The businessman is bankrupt and his company - Scotia Land (Bath Street) Ltd - has been placed in liquidation.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "We're disappointed that Mr Pocock failed to honour his commitment to the people of Glasgow."

He said museums will remain open seven days a week.

"Any shortfall has been met within existing budgets," he added.

BBC Scotland news website was unable to contact Mr Pocock, who is managing director of Scotia Land (Bath Street) Ltd.
