Four men have been arrested in connection with the killing of Emma Caldwell in 2005.

Police said they were detained at dawn in Glasgow city centre and several premises were being searched.

Ms Caldwell, 27, who had been working as a prostitute, disappeared from a hostel in Glasgow's south side.

Police said four men aged 31, 34, 35 and 55 were arrested following raids on properties in Bridge Street in Glasgow city centre and Duke Street.

The premises in Bridge Street had been searched at an earlier stage in the investigation.

Crimewatch appeal

A police inquiry was first launched after a dog walker discovered Ms Caldwell's body in woods near Roberton, South Lanarkshire, at about 1300 BST on 8 May 2005.

She had last been at about 2300 BST on 4 April near a women's hostel in the Govanhill area of Glasgow.

Ms Caldwell had become addicted to heroin after the death of her sister and turned to prostitution to feed her habit.

Anne Wallace, from the Salt and Light Bus Ministry, a support group for prostitutes, said: "I am delighted that four men have been held in connection with Emma's murder.

"It shows that the police have never given up and they have to be commended for their hard work.

"This may begin to help Emma's family with their process of grieving."

Strathclyde Police made repeated appeals to the public to find her killer.

At one point, detectives projected a 60ft image of her onto a tower block in Glasgow's Gorbals district.

An appeal was also screened on the BBC's Crimewatch programme and a £10,000 reward was offered by Crimestoppers.
