First ScotRail, the operators of the damaged train, said passengers had continued their journeys using the next available service.

A spokesman for the company said: "We hope that BTP inquiries lead to an arrest and a conviction for whoever is responsible."

The incident is believed to have taken place at an overbridge at McLaurin Crescent, Johnstone.

There is no description of the person or people responsible but police said they are examining CCTV footage and speaking to residents.

Det Con Anthony Comiskey, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: "This was a reckless act of vandalism leaving the driver injured."

He has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact him.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "This kind of incident is a real threat to drivers and is not acceptable. We will support BSP in any way we can in their investigation."
