Axed New Year party cost £160,000
George Square, Glasgow
Up to 25,000 people were due to attend the George Square event
Hogmanay celebrations which had to be cancelled because of bad weather have left Glasgow with a bill for £160,000.

The city council disclosed the figure after counting the full cost of the cancelled event.

Up to 25,000 people were due to attend the public festivities when the council said the weather was too bad to allow the event to go ahead.

Cancellation costs for Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations are still being calculated, officials said.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "This is significantly less than it would have cost to insure the event against such conditions over a number of years.

"The cancellation costs will be met from existing budgets."
