Strathclyde Police said a number of motorists fail to heed warnings

Scotland's largest police force is to dedicate more police officers to the task of catching drink and drug-drivers during the festive season.

Strathclyde Police reported 311 motorists caught under the influence in last year's campaign.

This year's Don't Risk It drive got under way at 0700 GMT and will run until Wednesday 3 January at 0700 GMT.

Supt Pat Docherty, head of road policing, urged the public to turn-in drink and drug-drivers.

"Drink and drug-driving has long been regarded as socially unacceptable, as no-one wishes to share the roads with impaired drivers who present such a risk of injury to themselves and others," he said.

This year's campaign highlights the consequences of drink-driving including the "very real danger of causing death or injury".

Conviction results in an automatic ban from driving.

Analysis of previous campaigns has given police a picture of those times and locations where offenders are most willing to take a chance.
