A 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a shopkeeper in South Ayrshire.

Ahmjid Ismail, 34, was stabbed at about 1730 GMT on Wednesday while working alone in Kirkland Stores in Maybole.

Strathclyde Police said a man had been arrested and was being detained in police custody.

The arrested man was expected to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court on Monday. A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Mr Ismail was working at his father's store, located just opposite a primary school, when he was attacked.

He was discovered by a member of the public and taken to Ayr Hospital but died a short time later.

Det Supt John Mitchell said: "Mr Ismail and his family are well known and very popular within Maybole having served the local community within their store for over 20 years.

"Customers have described Mr Ismail as a jovial, friendly man who enjoyed his job and always took the time to speak to his customers."
