8,000 pipers to march on Glasgow

Pipers from around the world are expected on Glasgow Green
A record number of bands are expected to take part in the World Pipe Band Championships which will be held on Glasgow Green on Saturday, 12 August.

About 250 bands and 8,000 pipers and drummers from Scotland, Europe, Australia, Canada, the US and New Zealand are set to attend the "Worlds".

Glasgow Lord Provost Liz Cameron has been named Chieftain of the event.

She said: "Glasgow will be the epicentre of both modern and traditional music."

The championship is organised by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Chief executive Ian Embelton said: "This promises to be the biggest and best Worlds to date."

An international festival called Piping Live! will be held in the week before the championships.
