Headstones desecrated at cemetery

More than two dozen gravestones have been desecrated by vandals at a cemetery in West Lothian.

Gravestones were knocked down, broken or chipped and scratched in Manse Road Cemetery in Whitburn between midday on 31 October and 0900 GMT on 1 November.

Police said the vandals' rampage had left damage put at more than £5,000.

Insp Michaela Kerr, of Lothian and Borders Police, said it was a "despicable crime" and urged witnesses to come forward.

She said: "This is a despicable crime and one which causes great distress to families who have already suffered the loss of loved ones.

"I'm sure the community will support the police in their efforts to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.

"Anyone who saw the incident, which saw 27 gravestones damaged, or has any information should contact the police immediately."
