Bailiffs to reel in fish poachers

Poachers fishing out of season on a Lothian river are to be targeted by a team of bailiffs carrying out regular patrols of the area.

The 16 bailiffs have already seen off two poachers caught at the River Almond on Thursday.

They called police after spotting the men, aged 24 and 25, and they were charged with fishing out of season.

Police are to support the bailiffs when requested to attend the waters where poachers are seen.

Bill Cunningham, of the Forth District Salmon Fisheries Board, said: "This particular weir is often used by illegal fishers, mostly by using illegal methods which will cause long-term damage to the fish.

"The trout fishing season on the river is between 15 March and 6 October. This is to allow the fish to spawn and ensure the continuation of the species.

"Also sea trout and salmon are only allowed to be fished from the river at certain times and only by persons who hold leases issued by the Crown Office. No leases have been issued for this stretch of water."
