Pair arrested over hedgehog death

Two teenagers accused of kicking a hedgehog to death have been arrested.

Police said a 16-year-old boy had been charged and a 14-year-old boy referred to the Children's Reporter over the incident in Edinburgh.

The arrests follow a five-month investigation into the animal's death at Gilmerton Dykes Crescent in March.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said it took such incidents seriously due to their "potential links with other areas of criminality".

He added: "Although not common, it has been known for hedgehogs to occasionally suffer acts of unnecessary cruelty inflicted by humans."

He urged anyone who sees unnecessary cruelty being caused to an animal to contact the police or the Scottish SPCA.
