Acid spill sparks chemical alert

Nitric acid sign
The acid is in its strongest form and can cause severe burns

Firefighters have contained a spill of highly toxic acid leaking from a tanker in Fife.

Nitric acid escaped from the vehicle near Diageo's Cameron Bridge distillery outside Leven.

Fire crews were worried the acid might react with rain, creating toxic fumes, but they managed to empty the tanker while the weather remained dry.

People living in nearby villages were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed during the emergency.

The acid, which is highly corrosive, is in its strongest state. It is used to clean pipes at the distillery.

The vehicle was carrying 13,000 litres of the chemical.
