Hopes monkeys will return to cage

Edinburgh zookeepers are hoping all their escaped monkeys will soon be back in their enclosure after two returned of their own accord.

The other three escapees have been sitting on the cage wall.

The barbary macaques, which are not said to pose a threat to humans, made their bid for freedom on Friday.

Five monkeys found a "chink in the armour" of their enclosure's security, keepers said. It is hoped the remaining monkeys will return on Thursday.

The new primates from a centre in Germany, climbed a wall before squeezing under an electric fence.

Once the monkeys have all returned, the gap under the electric fence will be modified so they are unable to leave again.

Earlier this week Lorna Hughes, head zookeeper, told BBC Scotland they were younger and more agile than macaques previously held in the cage and that they were being lured back to the enclosure with their favourite foods.
