A teenager has appeared in court charged with murder following the death of a man struck by a car in an apparent hit-and-run incident in Edinburgh.

Lee Coyle, 16, appeared on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court accused of killing Paul Bonnar, 30, in Walter Scott Avenue on Sunday.

Mr Coyle, from Edinburgh, was remanded in custody after a brief appearance in private before Sheriff Kathryn Mackie.

No plea or declaration was made and the case was continued for further inquiry.

Coyle also faced various other charges, including road traffic offences and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Mr Bonnar, who lived in the Gilmerton area of Edinburgh, was married with a 12-year-old daughter.

He had been due to celebrate his 31st birthday on Monday and his wedding anniversary on Tuesday.

He died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after being struck by a car at 0130 BST on Sunday.

Police believe the car involved was a white Mitsubishi Evolution, allegedly stolen from Brunswick Street.

The vehicle was later discovered in the Wisp area of the city.

Police appealed for information about a white Mitsubishi Evolution

Lothian and Borders Police have launched a fresh appeal for information surrounding the car.

The police also want information in relation to a disturbance that happened in Gilmerton Road just before Mr Bonnar's death.

And they are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle on the road after it left Brunswick Street at about 2230 BST on Saturday night.

Det Ch Insp Amanda McGrath, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our investigation is not complete and we are keen to establish exactly where the car went from Brunswick Street before being involved in the alleged incident in Walter Scott Avenue, and eventually abandoned at the Wisp.

"Anyone with information that can help us re-trace the vehicle's movements before 0130 BST should contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who was in the Gilmerton Road area between 0100 BST and 0130 BST and saw anything suspicious should also come forward."
