Outdoor sculpture garden blossoms

A 90-acre park full of outdoor artwork by leading sculptors, which promises to put the Lothians firmly on the modern art map, has opened.

Jupiter Artland park at Bonnington House, Kirknewton, is the creation of a wealthy art-loving Scottish couple.

It is the brainchild of Nicky Wilson, a former art teacher and her husband Robert, chairman of Nelson's, which makes homeopathic medicines.

It is already being hailed as a world-class attraction.

It has new work commissioned direct from the artists including Anish Kapoor, one of the world's most influential sculptors, and Andy Goldsworthy, the Scottish-based sculptor who works with natural wood and stone.

There are also new works from Angel of the North sculptor Antony Gormley, and the late Ian Hamilton Finlay.

Simon Groom, director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, said: "It's unbelievable what they have done.

"I can't think of anything that parallels this. For anywhere it's extraordinary, but just outside of Edinburgh it's utterly amazing."

The collection includes:

  • A series of site specific works by Andy Goldsworthy.
  • A large-scale figure by one of the UK's finest sculptors Antony Gormley.
  • A four acre landform by Charles Jencks whose recent work is on view at the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
  • A huge orchid by Marc Quinn
  • Anish Kapoor's amazing "Suck"
  • A series of work by Ian Hamilton Finlay
  • Site specific works by Cornelia Parker, Alec Finlay, Peter Liversidge, Laura Ford and Shane Waltener

Jupiter Artland will be open from 15 May (Friday-Sundays only 1000 BST until 1600 BST) until 31 July.

During the Edinburgh Arts Festival opening will be extended to Thursday - Sunday from 1000 BST to 1600 BST until 31 August.
