Pitch invasion fans plead guilty

Ryan Wyllie
Hearts said Wyllie would be banned indefinitely from Tynecastle

A 16-year-old Hearts season-ticket holder has been fined £400 for running onto the pitch at Tynecastle and confronting Hibs player Derek Riordan.

Ryan Wyllie, from Kirkcaldy, was one of two supporters arrested after Hibs scored a late penalty during Thursday's Edinburgh derby.

Wyllie pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to breach of the peace.

Robert Philips, 25, from Edinburgh, also admitted breach of the peace. Sentence was deferred.

Hearts confirmed the two supporters faced "indefinite bans" from the stadium after climbing over a safety barrier.

Sheriff Mhairi Stephen stopped short of handing Wyllie a lifetime football banning order, and told the teenager he would suffer the consequences of his behaviour.

The season ticket holder was among several Hearts fan incensed by Riordan's gestures towards them following his goal in the 78th minute.

"After the penalty was scored Mr Wyllie managed to climb the fence and ran onto the pitch at the player who scored the penalty, shouting and swearing various unpleasant things at him," fiscal depute Malcolm Stewart said.

"He managed to reach the player but was fended off by him very quickly.

"Police went onto the pitch and arrested him."

His lawyer James Grant said his client was "immature" and reacted to Riordan's gestures.

"When he observed the others going onto the field, he got caught up in the emotion," Mr Grant said.

"He can hardly believe his stupidity, he apologises for his actions."

'Back pages'

Sheriff Stephen described his actions as "completely unacceptable" but reduced the fine from £600 because he pled guilty at the first opportunity.

"Obviously you succeeded in getting yourself right over the back pages of the papers," said the sheriff.

"It's difficult to accept that you were simply caught up with the others when you seemed to be the one who made not direct contact with the goalscorer but was the only person who was round about the goal scorer.

"Clearly you had an objective."

During Philips case, the court heard how he had run onto the pitch but was escorted off by security guards moments later, and spent the night in police cells.

Justice of the Peace David Hamilton said: "I'm considering a custodial sentence but before going down that route I will call for a social inquiry report on you."

Philips's lawyer, Nigel Bruce, said his client was a first offender and "extremely remorseful" about his behaviour.

"A young man, out of frustration, jumped the barrier," he said.

"He tells me as soon as he did that he thought 'what am I doing?' and tried to get back in the crowd but was arrested.

"He's very sorry for what he's done here."

Hearts managing director Campbell Ogilvie said in a statement released through the club website: "We have acted quickly with the police to identify two supporters who entered the playing area during the game.

"We have now written to both individuals and they will receive immediate bans from Hearts games."
