'Terrifying' sex attack on woman

A woman has been left "severely traumatised" after being sexually assaulted in the centre of Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old victim was walking alone in West Register Street, off Princes Street, at 0230 BST.

She was pushed into a doorway and assaulted by the suspect, who then walked off towards Princes Street.

He was described as being 5ft 8in tall, with blond hair and possibly wearing a grey short-sleeved t-shirt. Police described the attack as "terrifying".

Det Ch Insp John McKenzie of Lothian and Borders Police said: "The victim has been put through a terrifying ordeal, and she has been left severely traumatised by the incident.

"We need to speak to anyone who may have information that can help our enquiries to come forward.

"Anyone who was in the area of West Register Street or the east end of Princes Street in the early hours of this morning, and noticed a man fitting the description of the suspect acting suspiciously there, should get in touch.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises his description should also contact us immediately."
