'Shocking' attacks on pensioners

Attacks on a 76-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man in Edinburgh have been described as "extremely shocking".

Police said the attacks happened within minutes of each other at about 1300 GMT in the Easter Road area of the city.

Officers described the suspect as 30 to 40, about 5ft 7in to 5ft 10in, with dark hair and heavy stubble.

In the first incident, a 76-year-old woman was punched in the face. Minutes later Frank McGeachie, 83, was slashed in the face with a knife.

A police spokesman said: "These attacks were entirely unprovoked, and in both cases, extremely shocking.

"The elderly man has been taken to the ERI where he is receiving treatment for serious facial injuries.

"While the female victim did not require hospital treatment, she is understandably traumatised as a result of her ordeal."
