'Shrek' in armed city store raid

The man was wearing a mask of the Shrek film character

A man wearing a Shrek mask who robbed an Edinburgh store at knifepoint is being hunted by police.

The incident happened on Sunday at about 0910 GMT at the Scotmid store in Oxgangs Road North.

Pointing the knife at staff, he ordered them to empty the 400 contents of the till and 200 cigarettes into a bag before he ran off.

The thief was white, 5ft 9in tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a dark hooded top as well as the Shrek mask.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This is a very serious crime in which the suspect has used an unusual method to conceal his identity.

"We are now appealing for anyone who recognises the description of the male to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone in the area at the time who can provide information to help with our enquiries should also come forward."
