Bargain hunters have been taking advantage of the closing down sale

Police were forced to close a road to a Woolworths store in Edinburgh after shoppers rushed to a closing-down sale.

So much traffic arrived at the Big W at the Milton Link that cars backed up onto the dual carriageway of the westbound A1 into the city.

Shoppers who made it into the store were reportedly angry that items had not been discounted as advertised.

It also appeared that some staff had not turned up for work after the company failed to find a buyer.

The access road into the Milton Link retail park was closed from 1045 GMT until just after 1300 GMT on Thursday.

Bargain hunters flocked to the store's 815 branches across the UK as the closure sale got under way.

Woolworths went into administration on 26 November with £385m of debt.

The firm's music, DVD and games distribution subsidiary, Entertainment UK, is also in administration.

Woolworths had been due to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
