Motorists had been stuck in two hours of traffic jams following the flooding

One lane of the A702 at Damhead in Midlothian which was closed after it was flooded by a burst water pipe could reopen for the evening rush hour.

Lothian and Borders Police said they were making every effort to help cut the congestion following the incident which started on Tuesday morning.

Police also said they were trying to reopen the A703 by Wednesday evening.

The area is currently closed between Hillend and Silverburn as well as Old Pentland Road and the A703.

Skiers trying to access Midlothian Ski Centre were being told not to follow the diversion signs and instead follow their normal route to the slopes.

Commuters have spent up to two hours in traffic jams in the area following the flooding.

Craig Lawson, Scottish Water regional manager, said: "Scottish Water would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any disruption this may have caused.

"Our engineers have been working around the clock, in difficult conditions, to repair the burst water main."
