Vandals are thought to have usde sledgehammers on the bridge

Vandals who smashed a 20ft wall along the edge of a West Lothian bridge, which is more than 100 years old, are being sought by police.

It is understood the vandals used sledgehammers over several hours to cause the damage, which will now cost £10,000 to repair.

Between 1300 BST and 1500 BST on Monday the damage was caused to the bridge near the Lanthorn Centre in Dedridge.

The footbridge is in woodland near a duck pond. The bridge has been closed.

Alan Scott, a Lothian and Borders Police spokesman, said: "This is a wanton mindless act of vandalism to an historic icon in this part of the town.

"An estimated cost of up to £10,000 to repair the bridge has been quoted.

"The bridge will be closed for some considerable time while repairs are carried out.

"We would appeal to anyone who knows who is responsible for the vandalism to contact the police".
