Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack

A man is recovering from serious head injuries after being attacked by a gang in Edinburgh.

Witnesses are being sought after the 30-year-old man was "seriously assaulted" outside the Volunteer Arms on Leith Walk on Sunday at 0015 BST.

The 30-year-old was attacked by a group of men and women following a dispute.

He was then assaulted again further down the road near Kwik Fit. Up to a dozen people were involved; there is no description of individual attackers.

The victim suffered serious head injuries, and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment. He has since been released.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said the man has been left with a huge cut to the back of his head.

He said: "This man will suffer permanent scarring as a result of this attack.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and who saw what happened, to get in touch with police."
