Richey in court on assault charge

A Scot who was freed from death row in America has appeared on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with assault to severe injury.

Kenny Richey, 43, made a brief appearance in private before Sheriff Isabella McColl.

No plea or declaration was made on his behalf and the case was continued for further inquiry.

Mr Richey was remanded in custody. His appearance in court follows an alleged assault on a 63-year old man in July.

Mr Richey spent more than two decades in a US jail awaiting execution.

He returned to Scotland after being released earlier this year.
