First female Scots top cop speaks

Chief Constable Norma Graham
Norma Graham moves up the ranks in Fife from being assistant chief

Scotland's only female police chief has spoken for the first time since taking up the role.

Norma Graham is the new Chief Constable of Fife Constabulary and moves up from being assistant chief in the force.

She said it was a significant point for Scotland to have a female chief constable and anticipated more women being appointed to senior force roles.

Mrs Graham, who joined Fife from Central Scotland Police in 2005, takes over from retiring Peter Wilson.

She said: "I think it's significant because it is the first but hopefully it's certainly not going to be the last.

"I think the way things are moving in Scottish policing and in fact policing across the UK, then there are a huge number of talented women that are starting to come through the ranks.

"I don't think it's particularly important to any of the staff or indeed the communities of Fife who's leading their constabulary. The main thing for them is who delivers and we're making sure that happens for them."

Mrs Graham started her career at Lothian and Borders Police in 1981.

She later moved to HM Inspectorate of Constabulary before becoming assistant chief constable in Central Scotland in 2002.

Mrs Graham became deputy chief constable in Fife in 2005.

The decision to appoint her to the top position was made by Fife Council's police committee.

Speaking about the level of interest in the new chief, committee chairman, Cllr George Kay, said: "It has caused me a certain amount of surprise because I'm somebody who believes in diversity and really in this 21st Century, should we be asking these questions about the chief constable being a woman?"
