Scotland's first female Chief Constable has been appointed to replace the outgoing head of Fife Constabulary.

Norma Graham, the former deputy Chief Constable of the force, replaces Peter Wilson who retired a week ago.

Mrs Graham joined the police at Lothian and Borders in 1981 and has worked in both uniform and CID roles. She is currently acting Chief Constable.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has offered his congratulations on being Scotland's first female police chief.

He said: "She has made, and I am sure will continue to make, an outstanding contribution to policing in Scotland, through her effectiveness in operational leadership; her championing of diversity in a service that is, even now, still predominantly white and male in composition; and her commitment as a driver of change and modernisation in the police service".

Mrs Graham said: "I am absolutely delighted to be appointed Chief Constable of Fife Constabulary.

"It is a real honour to be asked to lead an organisation that is so committed to providing a high quality policing service to our communities".
