Police have released an e-fit of a man who approached a nine-year-old girl in Fife and asked her to "go with him".

The incident happened in Cardenden at about 1845 BST on Sunday 11 May. Police said they did not know what the man's motives were and want to trace him.

The youngster was walking home between Station Road and Hyndloup Terrace when she was approached, officers said.

She refused to go with him and ran to her grandparents' home nearby. The girl was not assaulted by the man.

He was described as being in his late 30s or early 40s, with short, bushy, brown curly hair with a moustache. He was wearing blue trousers and a blue top.

Left frightened

Fife Constabulary have appealed for help in identifying the man.

Sgt John Steel said: "The young girl clearly was frightened and has done the right thing by telling the police about it. The only way that we can judge if this was a purely innocent thing, would be if this man were to contact the police.

"We are keen to speak to him to clear up any misunderstandings that may exist and no-one should fear approaching us with any information that they may have.

"Incidents like this can create some unease in the community and to help allay any fears, increased patrols of uniformed and plain clothed officers have and will continue to be carried out".
