Police have said they will increase their presence to reassure people living in an area where a brother and sister were murdered.

The bodies of Michelle Thomson, 25, and her brother Ryan, seven, were found at their father's house in Buckhaven, near Methil in Fife, on Saturday evening.

Their father, Robert Thomson, is being treated in hospital in Dunfermline.

Police said the number of community officers in Buckhaven would be stepped up to help shocked local residents.

It is believed 49-year-old Mr Thomson has been under police guard at Queen Margaret Hospital.

'Reassurance and support'

Fife Constabulary have appealed to any members of the public who may have been around the Percival Road and Methilhaven Road areas to contact them.

Ch Insp Andy Morris said: "This is a terrible tragedy which has shocked the entire community, including the police officers who are involved in the investigation.

"We are working with community representatives, including the area's four councillors, to provide reassurance and support to both the family and residents of Buckhaven to help them cope with these very difficult events.

"There will be an increased number of community police officers in the area for additional support if required."
