Girl and father injured in attack

A 15-year-old girl's jaw was broken and her father suffered head injuries when they were attacked outside their Edinburgh home by a gang of youths.

The incident happened in the Quarrybank area at about 0500 BST when they were woken by a disturbance outside.

The 34-year-old father believed his car was being damaged and went outside to challenge the group. He was later joined by his wife and daughter.

The gang, thought to be three males and two females, ran off after the attack.

All three family members were taken to hospital in Edinburgh after the incident.

The father was struck on the head with what he believes was a bottle.

The 15-year-old girl's jaw was found to be broken and a tooth had punctured her cheek.

She was transferred to St John's hospital at Livingston.

Det Con Alan Bow, who is heading the investigation, said it was a "cowardly" attack.

He said: "It is outrageous when people are disturbed in their homes and subjected to this kind of attack in the street in the early hours of the day.

"We need to trace the culprits quickly so that they can answer for their actions.

"I would appeal to anyone with information which could help trace those responsible for this attack to contact us as soon as possible."
