Council u-turn on view block post

Officials in Edinburgh have decided to move a newly erected lamppost after coming under fire because it interrupts one of the city's most famous views.

The lighting is part of a number of new lamps put up on Calton Hill.

The controversial lamppost was erected in line with a viewpoint looking west down Princes Street which is popular with tourists and photographers.

One professional photographer, Colin Prior said the new post had ruined one of the capital's signature images.

A spokesman for the City of Edinburgh Council said: "We recently ordered the replacement of ageing lampposts on Calton Hill to help keep the area safe at night.

"There has always been a lamppost in the position in question but this one stands out more because it is new.

"Obviously we don't envisage a lamppost becoming part of Edinburgh's iconic cityscape so we're going to have it moved."
