A windsurfer who was practising his technique on the beach had to be rescued after being blown out to sea.

A Forth Coastguard spokesman said the man, who was in his 20s, was caught by a strong gust of wind at North Berwick.

His friend raised the alarm at about 1230 GMT and two lifeboats and a helicopter were called out.

The spokesman said the man had managed to swim part of the way into shore and was helped the rest of the way by coastguard teams.
