Memorial garden for murdered teen

Karen Dewar was murdered three years ago

A garden has been officially opened in memory of Fife teenager Karen Dewar, who was killed three years ago.

About 200 people gathered outside the memorial in Karen's hometown of Tayport to take part in a ceremony conducted by local councillor Maggie Taylor.

Colyn Evans, then 17, was jailed for life after he admitted strangling the 16-year-old, attacking her with a knife and setting her body on fire in a bin.

A fundraising campaign raised more than £50,000 to create the garden.

Bronze sculpture

It was planted by students at Elmwood College in Cupar, where Karen was also a student.

Karen's parents Frank and Allison unveiled a bronze sculpture created by local artist Gail Van Heerden, who also designed the garden's perimeter fence, which includes artwork created by pupils from Tayport Primary School.

Mr Dewar thanked everyone for their support since their 16-year-old daughter was killed.

He said: "Allison and I would like to thank the community of Tayport. The garden has brought Tayport together as a community.

"I think I will come up for a walk in the garden where I can have my thoughts to myself, but it isn't just for me, its for Karen's friends and the whole community.

"This is always a hard time of year for us, but having the garden gives us a special place to remember Karen."
