Norway to shut Scotland consulate

Norway has had a consulate in Scotland for more than 50 years
Norway has decided to end its formal diplomatic presence in Scotland after more than half a century.

The foreign ministry is to close the country's consulate in Edinburgh next year.

The announcement has drawn criticism from the Norwegian community in Scotland and politicians.

They argue it is more important than ever to foster closer relations between the two countries instead of downgrading them.

'Protect relations'

The closure will see two diplomatic posts transferred elsewhere and four local staff made redundant.

Norway's foreign minister Jonas Store said the changes, which follow a recent budget announcement, will ensure the Scandinavian country's resources are directed to political and geographical priority areas.

An honorary consul representing Norway in Scotland will be appointed next summer.

The Scottish National Party claimed that the downgrade had caused a storm of indignation in Scotland.

The party's Westminster leader Angus Robertson described the decision as disappointing and confusing.

He said he hopes the closure can be prevented to protect the excellent relations between Norway and Scotland.
