Star golfers teed up for contest

A-list celebrities from the worlds of music, film and television are expected in Fife this week to compete in golf's Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The prestigious event, over three courses including St Andrews, is held as a celebration of links golf.

This year, the star guest list includes Samuel L.Jackson, Sir Steve Redgrave and Boris Becker.

The four-day contest begins on Thursday with the professional tournament carrying a $5m (£2.5m) prize fund.

The unique championship sees professional golfers paired with amateurs.

Last year, US actor Bill Murray teamed up with Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Well known faces also spotted at last year's competition included actor Michael Douglas and singer Ronan Keating.

VisitScotland's James Lakie said: "The celebrity element is a major pull."

"The large worldwide audience looking in is fantastic for tourism. It highlights what the area has to offer in terms of golf.

The Alfred Dunhill Links is held over the Old Course in St Andrews as well as Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

Despite attracting competitors from across the world, all six winners have represented the UK.

World No 5 Ernie Els and Open champion Padraig Harrington are among the pros competing for the prize money this year.
