Athletes take on flatter marathon
The Edinburgh Marathon (PIC Sandy Young)

Almost 8,000 athletes have taken part in the Edinburgh Marathon.

The route for the event, now in its fifth year, was altered to improve the times of runners and to minimise traffic disruption.

The new flatter course wound around the East Lothian coastline before finishing at Musselburgh Racecourse.

Winning male Ian Grime completed the course with a time of 2hrs 32mins, and winning female Fiona Matheson crossed the finish after 2hrs 54mins.

The 1986 Commonwealth Games Marathon was the inspiration for the new course. Runners from more than 50 countries took part in the race.

While some of the runners were there to break records others were in fancy dress to raise money for charity.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the event had passed without incident.
