The Arts Council and Scottish Screen will be merged to form the new agency
A campaign has been launched to have the new arts agency Creative Scotland located in Edinburgh.

The leader of Edinburgh City Council Ewan Aitken said it would be an act of political vandalism to move the present arts council, based in the capital.

Glasgow is among the locations currently being considered for relocation of the new agency.

The Scottish Executive will make the final decision, probably after the elections in May.

The Arts Council is to be merged with Scottish Screen, which is based in Glasgow, to form a new agency, Creative Scotland.

The Scottish Executive is considering whether to locate the new venture in Glasgow as part of its policy of dispersing government jobs out of Edinburgh.

But Mr Aitken said the move would be bad for Scotland as a whole.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said he did not want to enter into an unseemly argument, but Glasgow had a large artistic community and a better claim.
