Leading author Alexander McCall Smith has been awarded an honorary degree at the University of Edinburgh.
The creator of the best-selling No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series graduated from Edinburgh in 1971.
He went on to teach at the school of law before retiring in 2005. He is an emeritus professor of the university.
Mr McCall Smith was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at the graduation ceremony held at the university's McEwan Hall.
In December 2006 Mr McCall Smith was made a CBE for services to literature.
