Brave-hearted swimmers have taken the plunge into the icy waters of the Forth for the annual Loony Dook in aid of good causes.

People dressed as everything from Santas and cartoon characters to a not so cowardly lion made a splash at South Queensferry.

The fancy dress contingent was joined by those in swimming trunks as they ran into the water with gritted teeth.

The annual event raises thousands of pounds for worthy causes.

The event attracted the brave from the Lothians and beyond, with some Australians - more used to the balmy waters of Bondi than the chilly waters of the Forth - enjoying the fun.

One Dooker, who wore a medical coat over her bikini, took the plunge as penance for not losing all of the weight she had promised to shed in 2006.

Another dressed as a very passable pirate confirmed the Forth could never be confused for the Caribbean.

BBC Scotland reporter Aileen Clark, who witnessed this year's event, said: "The RNLI and coastguards ensured everyone was able to enjoy the proceedings in safety.

"Thankfully no-one required rescue, so there was no need to interrupt their laughing."
