Pub shooting was 'cold blooded'

Two men were shot in the incident at The Marmion pub
A shooting in an Edinburgh pub was cold blooded murder, a trial has been told.

Prosecuting advocate depute, Alex Prentice, said a defenceless man was killed after two masked men entered The Marmion pub on a Saturday night.

The shootings left ex-boxing champ Alex McKinnon, 32, dead and his brother-in law, James Hendry, 27, badly injured.

At Edinburgh High Court, Jamie Bain, 22, Richard Cosgrove, 21, and Bernard Young, 19, have denied murder and attempted murder.

In his closing speech to the jury, Mr Prentice said: "This must have been an absolutely horrific event.

Pulled the trigger

"A shotgun is fired into the chest of a defenceless member of the public at the bar and he falls to the ground.

"It is fired again into the back of a defenceless man and he drops down and dies very shortly thereafter.

"What we have heard about in this case is, in my submission, nothing other than cold-blooded murder and attempted murder."

It was "astonishing" and "fortuitous" that Mr Hendry did not die, said Mr Prentice.

He added that although only one man had pulled the trigger it was a matter of law that all of them were guilty if it was "a common criminal purpose."

The trial continues.
