Three men accused of a double pub shooting in Edinburgh have chosen to remain silent at their trial.

Lawyers for Jamie Bain, 22, Richard Cosgrove, 21, and Bernard Young, 19, told the High Court in Edinburgh they would not give evidence.

The trial has heard how ex-boxing star Alex McKinnon, 32, was killed at The Marmion pub on 22 April.

His brother-in-law, James Hendry, 27, was left badly injured. The three men deny murder and attempted murder.

Mr Cosgrove claims he was forced to go to the pub by Mr Bain, who had the shotgun.

Buying cigarettes

Mr Young claims he was babysitting at his home in Southhouse Walk.

The last witness in the trial was Mr Young's sister-in-law Ellis Thom, 15, who said she was also in the house that night.

She said Mr Young - known as Ben - went out at "the back of eight" to get her chips and to buy cigarettes for his wife, returning about 25 minutes later.

That was the only time he went out that night, she told solicitor advocate Vincent Belmonte, defending Mr Young.

The jury is due to begin hearing lawyers' closing speeches on Monday.

The trial, now in its third week, earlier heard that mother-of-two Louisa McKinnon, 31, had been drinking in The Marmion that evening with husband, Alex, and her brother James.

She left to visit a friend shortly before the two were gunned down.

Mrs McKinnon, of Gilmerton, Edinburgh, told how she returned to the pub later to see police and ambulances - and her brother being carried out on a stretcher.

Later, at Edinburgh's New Royal Infirmary, she learned that her husband had died.

Pathologist Professor Anthony Busuttil told the trial that Mr McKinnon had been shot in the back at close range, some of the pellets hitting his heart.

There was no way he could have survived the massive internal damage caused by the shotgun blast, he said.
