A small Scottish town has launched a fundraising drive to create a £50,000 permanent memorial to a schoolgirl murdered in Fife.

Karen Dewar, 16, was killed last year in Tayport after she was attacked by a man carrying a knife.

Colyn Evans, 18, was jailed for life after he admitted strangling the 16-year-old in January 2005.

Councillor Maggie Taylor hopes to raise the money design and build a garden on an empty site in Castle Street.

Cllr Taylor has already pledged £20,000, which amounts to her entire annual allocation from Fife Council, to launch the campaign.

Karen's father, Frank Dewar, welcomed the idea of a garden filled with lilac-coloured flowers as "a reminder of Karen's life".

Evans moved into Tay Street, which was used as temporary accommodation for homeless people, less than six months before he murdered the 16-year-old who had befriended him.
