City police unit begins work
Princes Street
Demands on policing in Edinburgh have been growing
Scotland's first city centre policing unit is due to be launched in Edinburgh.

Lothian and Borders Police is introducing the 25-strong squad because of an increasing demand for policing in the capital.

The formation of the unit is due to be announced on Tuesday morning.

It has been made possible after Lothian and Borders Police was awarded a special grant, similar to the one paid to the Metropolitan Police in London.

The force has been campaigning for more than a year for the funding to set up the unit.

The demand for policing in central Edinburgh has risen as the number of bars and restaurants grows and the city attracts a continual influx of visitors.

There is also an increased need for the force to police marches, processions, demonstrations, VIP visits and other special events.

The officers will also provide added support for major events like Hogmanay and the festival fireworks.

High profile

Lothian and Borders chief constable Sir Roy Cameron said he is certain the force would make a positive impact.

"One of the big issues we've got is the sheer high profile of operational demands in and around the city centre," he said.

"These officers will improve the service we provide in the city centre and will take a strain off other stations.

"We will also use them for high profile, targeted foot patrols to reduce crime and the fear of crime."
