Dr No is being screened in Princes Street Gardens
Sir Sean Connery's home city of Edinburgh is marking the former James Bond star's 70th birthday with an open-air film show.

Sir Sean, who was knighted last month by the Queen, is 70 on Friday.

His birthday is being honoured with an open-air screening of Dr No, the film which propelled him to stardom as the master spy, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Festival planners hope the weather will prevail for the show in Princes Street Gardens.

The event, which has been organised by the Edinburgh Fringe and International Film festivals, starts at 2100 BST.

A Fringe spokesman played down rumours that Sir Sean might be planning to attend.

He said: "It's a surprise to us if he is coming. We're not expecting him."

Sir Sean described receiving his knighthood as "one of the proudest days of my life".

He wore Highland dress and was accompanied by his wife Micheline and brother Neil at the ceremony in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

He said: "I think it's a great honour for Scotland. There's only one day of the Honours system up here."

His support for the Scottish National Party and an independent Scotland is reported to have resulted in him being denied a knighthood in the 1997 and 1998 honours lists.

The actor, who lives in Marbella, donates 4,800 a month to party coffers.
