Two men have escaped without injury after a 50ft tree fell on top of their car in the centre of Edinburgh.

The Vauxhall car in which the men were travelling was stopped at the junction of Cranston Street and Canongate on the city's Royal Mile at about 1830 GMT.

Police said the pair were treated for shock but did not receive any injuries.

The Royal Mile has been closed from the St Mary's Street junction while the emergency services work to remove the tree from the road.
