A Glasgow hospital has been named as the Best New Building outside London at a design awards ceremony.

Reiach and Hall's design of Stobhill Hospital impressed judges of the Roses Design Awards, who gave it their Grand Prix award.

The judges said they felt it broke new ground with a good use of space and light, far removed from traditional hospital design.

The award ceremony was held in Nottingham on Friday night.

John McAslan and Partners, whose current work includes refurbishing Dunoon Burgh Halls, won the prize for architect team of the year, while Roxburgh McEwan Architects, who are restoring a historic cottage on Mull, won the chairman's award.

The event also marked the gathering of the Rubble Club, a new organisation celebrating architects who have had buildings demolished in their own lifetimes.

Event organiser Gordon Young said: "The Roses Design Awards provide a lasting tribute to the energy, passion and professionalism of both clients and architects whilst providing an ideal platform for the celebration of superlative design work.

"This year's results are tribute to the resilience of the sector, proving that ground-breaking work is still being produced despite the ongoing impact of recession."
