Charity walk in memory of Moira

The brother of murdered Glasgow businesswoman Moira Jones is beginning a 200-mile walk to raise money for a charity set up in her name.

The family established the Moira Fund to support families who have lost relatives through violence.

Grant Jones is walking from Fort William to Cape Wrath. The trek is expected to take up to three weeks.

Moira Jones was murdered in Queens Park in Glasgow, in May 2008. A Slovakian man was later convicted of the killing.

Grant Jones began his walk from Fort William on Saturday and hike over moorland and hills to Cape Wrath.

The Cape Wrath Trail is roughly 200 miles long and is said to be one of the toughest long distance treks in Great Britain. Travelling across pathless terrain, he hopes the walk can be completed in three weeks.

Speaking before he set off, Mr Jones told the BBC news website: "Having lived in Australia, I love going to remote areas, there is no definite route and it presents a real challenge.

"I am doing the walk in memory of my sister and also to create awareness about the charity."

Following her death, family, friends and colleagues of Moira Jones wanted to set up a charity in her memory. Once fully established, the Moira Fund will offers counselling and support for those who have been bereaved through violent death.

Mr Jones said: "Our family never imagined this could happen and the Moira Fund is in place to help those who have been affected by murder and manslaughter."

Marek Harcar , a 33-year-old Slovakian, was found guilty of murdering the 40-year-old businesswoman in April. He was also convicted of rape, robbery and attempting to defeat the ends of justice and will serve at least 25 years in jail before being deported.
