A teenage girl is said to be responding well to treatment after being struck by a car in the south of Scotland.

Investigations are continuing into the incident on Saturday night at Mews Lane in Kirkcudbright in which the 17-year-old suffered head injuries.

The girl, who is understood to be Polish, is being treated in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh where her condition is described as "serious".

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact them.

The girl was found lying in the Kirkcudbright street at about 2200 BST on Saturday.

The area was sealed off and police later removed a car from the scene.

The vehicle was taken to force headquarters at Dumfries for further examination.

A man - also thought to be Polish - was detained and questioned in connection with the incident.

Police have continued their appeal for witnesses to come forward.
