Mine worker crushed on lorry
Coal
The accident happened at a mine in Ayrshire
A man has been crushed to death at an open-cast coal mine in Ayrshire.

Neil Hodge, from Ochiltree, was believed to have been on the back of a 35-tonne truck, underneath the load carrier which had been hydraulically raised.

It fell on him without warning, killing him instantly.

None of the 30-year-old's colleagues at the Chalmerston complex at Dalmellington could do anything for him.

They were all sent home in shock as all operations were suspended.

The accident happened at 1215BST on Wednesday on the Pennyvenie extension to the site, which is operated by Crouch Mining on behalf of owners Scottish Coal.

A police spokesman said Mr Hodge had worked as the driver of a six-wheeled dumper truck which had been shifting earth at the time.

Crouch Mining immediately launched an investigation and called in health and safety teams.

A spokesman said: "A full inquiry into the circumstances of this tragic accident is already underway.

"Work on the site was stopped as a mark of respect and all the men were sent home.

"The man who died was employed by a sub-contractor and we wish to pass on our sincere condolences to his family."
