Drowned kayaker named by police

The Tay
The man was last seen launching his kayak on the Tay in the Wormit area

A kayaker who drowned in the Firth of Tay on Friday was a Slovakian engineer who had been working on a nearby farm.

Police said the family of Jan Ulicny had been contacted and arrangements were being made to repatriate his body.

The 27-year-old man was seen launching his yellow kayak onto the river at about 1830 BST near Wormit in Fife.

The alarm was raised and his body was later recovered following a search involving police, the coastguard and the Broughty Ferry lifeboat.

Inspector Alastair Topen, of Fife Constabulary, said: "Whilst it would be wrong to speculate what may have happened to Mr Ulicny, this incident serves as a reminder that open water can be dangerous.

"Before people venture out on to the water they should be well aware of their abilities and ensure that equipment they are using is in first class condition."
